ASMPT SMT Sale
One of the world's largest SMT equipment businesses may soon have a new owner. According to a Reuters report on October 26, 2026, IDG Capital has emerged as the most advanced bidder to buy the electronics assembly equipment business of Hong Kong-listed ASMPT, in a deal that could value the surface mount technology unit at more than $1 billion. For factories that depend on placement equipment, the transaction is a reminder of how concentrated the top of the SMT market has become - and why supplier stability matters as much as machine speed.
Industry Update
Reuters reported that ASMPT is targeting a valuation of about $1.5 billion for the SMT unit, although potential buyers may fall short of that expectation, and a deal could be reached in the coming weeks. Private equity firms FountainVest Partners and Triton Partners had also expressed interest and held discussions. ASMPT announced a strategic assessment of its SMT Solutions business in January 2026, considering a sale, joint venture, spin-off, listing or retaining the business.
The unit is large and growing: ASMPT's SMT business posted a 53.1% jump in revenue to HK$3.87 billion in the first half of 2026, with bookings up 87.8% to HK$6.98 billion - a record for the period - driven largely by AI server makers. Its main end markets are AI servers, optical transceivers and electric vehicles. ASMPT shares have risen 52% year to date, giving the company a market capitalization of about $6.5 billion, and the group forecast third-quarter revenue of $630 million to $690 million.
What It Means for SMT Lines
- A private equity owner typically focuses on cash flow and margin, so customers should watch service networks, spare-parts availability and software support terms in the coming years.
- Valuations of over $1 billion confirm that SMT equipment is now a strategic, high-demand asset class - driven by AI infrastructure rather than consumer electronics cycles.
- Consolidation at the top can push mid-market factories toward suppliers that offer complete line solutions at predictable cost, including Chinese equipment makers.
- When ownership changes, multi-year service contracts and spare-parts stocking plans deserve a second look before committing to large fleet purchases.
- For factories building new capacity, the practical lesson is to keep line software and data formats portable, so equipment choices remain flexible across suppliers.

Outlook
The ASMPT SMT sale, whatever its final form, marks a broader shift: SMT equipment is being repriced upward by AI demand, and ownership is consolidating around buyers who can fund long-term development. For mid-sized PCB assembly factories, that argues for diversified, well-supported equipment choices and clear total-cost-of-ownership comparisons. HWGC, a China SMT machine manufacturer, supplies four-head to twelve-head pick and place machines, reflow soldering ovens, solder paste printers, wave soldering systems, PCB loaders, conveyors and AOI/SPI inspection equipment, giving factories a stable alternative for complete SMT production lines.
