SMT Capex Recovery

Capital spending across electronics manufacturing is recovering, and the latest equipment earnings show it clearly. On October 22, 2026, Mycronic reported a 38% increase in third-quarter net sales to about $253 million and raised its full-year outlook to roughly $1 billion, citing demand tied to AI infrastructure, advanced packaging and defense investments. For SMT factories, the question is what this upcycle means in practice - and where the money is actually flowing.

Industry Update

Mycronic's third-quarter order intake rose 10% to about $286 million, while operating profit climbed to roughly $65 million from $27 million a year earlier. For the first nine months of 2026, net sales increased 23% to about $780 million and order intake rose 39% to about $870 million. Chief executive Anders Lindqvist said the Global Technologies division benefited from AI infrastructure, advanced packaging and defense demand, with PCB manufacturers continuing to increase investment in test equipment and die bonding solutions remaining strong.

The picture is not uniform. Mycronic's PCB Assembly Solutions division still faced subdued demand in the high-mix, low-volume segment, along with pricing pressure from Japanese competitors. Other suppliers confirm the stronger trend: Kitron reported third-quarter revenue up 59% with a record order backlog, and at NEPCON Asia 2026 in October, ASMPT, Essemtec and Hanwha Semitec all used the show to launch or debut next-generation placement, packaging and material-handling platforms.

What It Means for SMT Lines

  • New capital is concentrated in high-value segments: AI server boards, advanced packaging and defense electronics require tighter accuracy, better traceability and more inspection coverage per board.
  • Test and inspection investment is rising fastest, because high-end boards carry too much value to be inspected by eye or by sampling alone.
  • High-mix, low-volume demand remains soft, so factories in that segment need faster programming, quick changeover and flexible feeding rather than more raw speed.
  • Equipment pricing is under pressure in some segments - a negotiating opportunity for factories planning line upgrades in the next two quarters.
  • Capacity additions favor modular lines that can be expanded step by step, so capex can track actual order growth instead of betting on a single volume forecast.

Outlook

Most equipment suppliers now expect the upcycle to continue into 2027, driven by AI infrastructure and advanced packaging, while conventional high-mix assembly stays competitive. For mid-sized PCB assembly factories, the practical response is to invest where the return is measurable: placement accuracy, reflow consistency, inspection coverage and automated board handling that removes manual steps. HWGC, a China SMT machine manufacturer, supplies four-head to twelve-head pick and place machines, reflow soldering ovens, solder paste printers, wave soldering systems, PCB loaders and conveyors, and AOI/SPI inspection equipment for exactly this kind of staged line investment.
